Photon scattering by pseudoscalar mesons were investigated within the framework of the quark model. Contributions from direct diagrams and diagrams involving intermediate hadronic states have been analyzed. It is shown that accounting for intermediate scalar mesons is crucial for an adequate description of these processes. Numerical values ​​for the polarizabilities of pseudoscalar mesons were obtained.
